IMG Pathways to RANZCOG: Specialist vs Standard Route Explained
Nov 07, 2025
Introduction
Many IMGs dream of becoming Fellows of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG). The journey can be confusing, but understanding the two main pathways is crucial.
Pathway 1: Specialist Recognition (SRP)
- For IMGs with completed O&G training overseas.
- Requires assessment through RANZCOG Overseas Trained Specialist (OTS) process.
- May involve bridging exams or supervised practice.
Pathway 2: Standard Training
- For IMGs without full specialist training.
- Requires passing AMC MCQ and Clinical.
- Must gain general AHPRA registration and apply for FRANZCOG training posts.
“IMGs can absolutely succeed in RANZCOG — but you need to map your pathway early and show you’re aligned with Australian standards,” says A/Prof George Eskander.
Common Challenges
- Lack of Australian clinical experience.
- PESCI unpreparedness.
- Documentation and AHPRA delays.
Around 25–30% of IMG O&G applicants are assessed as ‘partially comparable’ and must complete bridging training (RANZCOG Annual Report 2024).
Final Thoughts
With early planning, IMGs can navigate AHPRA, RANZCOG, and AMC requirements to achieve Fellowship.
