Securing a place on the RANZCOG training program is highly competitive, especially for international medical graduates (IMGs) and junior doctors aiming to enter O&G in Australia or New Zealand.

But with the right strategy, you can build a strong, well-rounded portfolio that aligns with RANZCOG’s selection criteria - and stand out in a competitive field.

According to A/Prof George Eskander, PassGP Chief Examiner and former hospital Director:

“RANZCOG looks for more than just technical skill - they want people who show a real understanding of women’s health, leadership, and reflection. Your portfolio must reflect that.”

Here’s how to do it.

 What Is the RANZCOG Portfolio?

It’s the non-exam component of your training application, submitted alongside your CV and interview performance. It includes evidence of:

  • Clinical experience in O&G
  • Teaching and leadership
  • Research and publications
  • Communication and professionalism
  • Commitment to rural or underserved care

Your portfolio gives assessors insight into your values, interests, and trajectory as a future O&G consultant.

Key Components of a Strong Portfolio

  1. Clinical Experience
  • Minimum of 12 months in O&G (intern/resident)
  • Involvement in labour ward, antenatal care, gynaecology theatre
  • Logbook evidence if possible

Tip: Rotations in rural or regional settings score highly

  1. Procedural Skills
  • Hands-on experience with speculum exams, suturing, assisting in C-sections
  • Demonstrate practical O&G competency early
  1. Teaching and Supervision
  • Run intern or student tutorials
  • Peer-to-peer education counts
  • Get evaluations or feedback forms

Tip: Leadership in education is viewed favourably by assessors

  1. Research and Audit
  • Presentations at RANZCOG conferences
  • Local audits (e.g., CTG documentation, perineal tear outcomes)
  • Case reports or journal submissions
  1. Reflection and Professionalism
  • Demonstrate how you’ve grown as a clinician
  • Discuss difficult cases or moments of learning
  • Align with RANZCOG’s College Values: compassion, education, integrity, respect, advocacy

Supporting Documents to Include

  • Verified CV
  • Letters from consultants (structured referee reports)
  • Logbooks or procedural records
  • CPD certificates (e.g., ALS, PROMPT, Cultural Safety Training)
  • Summary of non-clinical contributions (e.g., rural health advocacy)

 Special Advice for IMGs

As an IMG, strengthen your case by:

  • Completing Australian-based observerships or rotations
  • Passing AMC and PESCI before applying
  • Demonstrating cultural safety and communication alignment with AHPRA and RANZCOG standards

A/Prof Eskander adds:

“RANZCOG has opened pathways to more diverse candidates but expects everyone to meet the same clinical and ethical standard. Show that you're already functioning at that level.”
